Why Books Can Be Considered As The Best Form Of Entertainment

Entertainment is something we need to break away from the daily routine of life. The monotonous lifestyle of modern society is the basic reason for many mental health problems. Our ancestors have shown us many ways to take a break and relax and then go to the usual routine with a refreshed mind and body. Festivals, carnivals, fairs, etc., are a part of the age-old way of getting away from the monotony of our daily life.

As technology developed, the idea of entertainment also changed. Though festivals and other types of traditions are still the foundation of our culture, people are not wholly dependent on them for their relaxing purposes. We live in an era where an average person has many interesting choices to keep oneself entertained.

The choice we make depends a lot on the interest we have in certain subjects. Technology has played a major role in cultivating our choices. Now with smartphones and online streaming, entertainment is just inside the palm of our hands. The two major choices we have are movies and books. Lots of people have found solace in watching movies, but books belong to a special genre of people who love to give wings to their imagination.

The wonderful world of books

Unlike visual entertainment, where the fast-moving visuals keep us glued to the screen, reading a book needs patience. Each page has to get connected to the reader. The writer’s perspective has to sink in, and the reader’s imagination has to play its part, and then the book becomes a world with endless possibilities that visual entertainment cannot compete with. There are oceans of books out there. You just need to pick one:

  • Fiction
  • Classics
  • History
  • Auto-biographies
  • Biographies
  • Religious books
  • Fantasies and the list just go on…

With books, the options become endless, and immersing yourself in a good read is a great way to break the norm of our daily activities. Reading books has great benefits, and they can even mold our character and behavior. A well-read man/woman has knowledge that can surpass the knowledge of any educated person.

Books are the best way of entertainment

Books have been around since a very long time, and it has still managed to keep the interest of the reader alive. Although many electronic goods have tried to take their place, reading the printed form has always been the best and still is and is always going to be so.

Technology has presented us with several gadgets that help us read even the latest edition in the market, but their main disadvantage is that they do die. Books, on the other hand, are alive even when our time passes away. Books can be passed on to generations if it is properly and neatly handled.

When you watch a movie, you somewhere get bored watching it multiple times but try reading an interesting book twice. You will find something you have missed the last time you read. Every time you read, something new comes up. I have personally experienced this with many books.

The other advantage of a book is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money; getting electronic gadgets can drain your pockets, and your kindle or your mobile cannot be shared with your friends, but a book can be shared. So the more you read, the more you develop.

A source of gaining knowledge

The greatest advantage of reading a book is that other than entertaining you, it also is a source of getting knowledge. Books keep us mentally active as we tend to visualize things, as is not the case with visual entertainment. The movies we watch don’t need our mind to visualize things, as the visuals are already there, and there is no need for any imagination, so your mind stops there. But when reading books, there are no boundaries, and you can let your imagination take you to places.

The improvement of one’s vocabulary is also an important aspect of reading books. As you read, you find new words and new contexts. This will help you develop your writing skills as well as your speaking skills.

Movies and books

Many interesting books have been made into movies, but every time you watch the movie version, you always feel that the book has been let down. The reason for this is a movie can never give you the details as a book can.

For example, just imagine Sherlock Holmes address-221B Baker Street is so famous that the readers can imagine every detail of the home. But once you see it in the movies, the imagination is gone, and you just see a building of brick and mortar.

So by saying that books are the best form of keeping yourself engaged and entertained cannot be shrugged off.

Children and reading

From childhood, the habit of reading has to be instilled because it will help the child focus on things, and it develops the concentration process. Reading storybooks to children at bedtime creates a bond between parents and children, and it also gives the child a happy world to dream about. Children have a lot of things to gain through books.

Their mind is fresh, and what they read or watch can have a deep impact on them. Unfortunately, today’s world is full of computer games and cartoons, this can affect your child’s thinking ability but on the other hand, giving him/her a book to read can help the development of the child in many ways.

Start your reading journey today

So just for a change, keep all your gadgets away and pick out a good book, and with a hot steaming cup of coffee, start reading. It may take some time to get immersed, but patience can work here. If you have picked the right book, then be assured you will find yourself in a different world that movies can never give you. Books can become your lifetime companion.

You can go into a completely different world and can experience the unimaginable. If you deprive yourself of reading, then you are depriving yourself of an ocean of emotions, feelings, and pleasures you never thought existed. Here are a few books that can help you make a choice, and if possible, find the time and read them all:

  • To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee
